CERNER MILLENNIUM Infrequent Provider Introduction Our expectation is for all who work at USA Health to be fluent in all aspects of the Cerner EHR necessary to deliver & document high-quality medical care. But we realize there are providers who only infrequently interact with our system, making it challenging to achieve & maintain a high level of comfort with all aspects of the program. To that end, we’ve created this primer to review core functionality—though we still strongly recommend that all users go through full training. This has been prepared for Millennium code level 2015.01.15 & mPage 6.0. Subsequent updates may display cosmetic & functional changes. Use the keyboard or mouse to advance.

Some names to know: Our EHR is Cerner Millennium. unity is the name USA has given its deployment of Cerner Millennium. PowerChart is the program in Cerner Millennium used by most medical/surgical providers in the inpatient & outpatient setting. FirstNet is the program in Cerner Millennium used by the Emergency Department. Some other specialties use other Cerner Millennium programs. Examples include Anesthesia, Pathology, & Radiology.

Who is this review intended for? Community providers who admit, consult, or operate infrequently at USA facilities. Community/adjunct faculty who supplement USA faculty on a part-time basis. Locum tenens providers. Providers visiting to deliver a specialized service, or to provide or receive a specialized training experience. Other circumstances to be considered upon request of provider or clinical department.

If your only activities at USA are to “Refer & Follow”: An online-only course will be made available for you to learn how to get read-only access to the EHR. If you generally refer to USA providers & don’t plan to try to follow events via the EHR, you don’t need to participate in any training.

For all other providers who deliver care at USA, competence in these core functions is required, regardless of how frequently work is performed at our facilities: Locate, review, & update patient records, including medical histories, allergies, vital signs, test results, & clinical notes. Perform electronic order entry. Use Message Center to send & receive communications, review incoming test results, sign off orders, & review/cosign resident & student notes. Electronically prescribe medications, as well as review/update medication lists. Document care delivery within the EHR, or in a manner that can be incorporated into the EHR.

Our strategies to ensure that infrequent users can achieve this degree of functionality include: The web-based courses that all providers are required to take before classroom training. Regular classroom training, like all USA faculty & staff are expected to take, if at all feasible. If regular classroom training cannot be accomplished, review of this primer plus a short classroom session. Accommodation of documentation through dictation services, & in rare cases paper documentation, when preferable alternatives are not achievable.

Our strategies to ensure that infrequent users can achieve this degree of functionality include: Attendance at “Learning Lab” opportunities in late November to gain additional practice, & to establish frequently-used “Favorites”—orders, commonly used text, etc. At-the-elbow support during at least the first encounters a provider performs using the EHR.

To help us provide personal assistance the first times you attend a patient at a USA facility after Go-Live: If you’re scheduling a surgical case, planning an upcoming delivery, etc., at a USA facility, please notify our staff that you’ll need some help with the EHR so they can make the support team aware of this. Make sure you’ve completed training discussed herein. If USA residents assist in the care you render at our facilities, they may be able to assist you as well, as allowed by their supervisors & other duties.
