Mrs. Oulton Birt Grade 9 Science

Chemistry is the study of matter What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter

Chemisty is the study of : the properties of matter, the changes that matter can undergo, and the laws that describe these changes. Chemists study different materials to learn their properties and discover their uses.

CHEMISTRY… IS THIS WHAT YOU THINK?

Chemistry is Life!

What is Matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space!

Properties of Matter Properties are characteristics that are used to identify and describe objects. There are two general properties of matter: Physical properties Chemical properties

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Physical Properties A physical property is description of a substance A physical property does NOT involve a substance becoming a new substance

Physical Properties Observed with Senses Property Describing the Property Colour Is it black, white, colourless, red, blue, greenish-yellow...? Texture Is it fine, coarse, smooth, gritty...? Odour Is it odourless, spicy, sharp, burnt...? Lustre Is it shiny, dull...? Clarity Is it clear, cloudy, opaque...? Taste Is it sweet, sour, salty, bitter...?

Types of Physical Properties State of matter Hardness Malleability Ductility Melting and Boiling Points Crystal Form Solubility Viscosity Density

Hardness A measure of the resistance of a solid to being scratched

Malleability The ability for a solid to be bent into different shapes

Ductility The ability for a solid to be pulled into wires

Melting and Boiling Points The temperature at which a substance changes state

Crystal Form Solids that have a definite structure of cubes or blocks with a regular pattern Himalayan salt is a marketing term forrock salt from Pakistan, which began being sold by various companies in Europe, North America, and Australia in the early 21st century. It is mined in the Khewra Salt Mines, the second largest salt mine in the world, located in Khewra, Jhelum District, Punjab, Pakistan, about 300 km from the Himalayas, about 160 kilometres from Islamabad, and 260 kilometres from Lahore, and in the foothills of the Salt Range.

Solubility The ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent

Viscosity Refers to how easily a liquid flows: the thicker the liquid, the more viscous it is

Density The amount of matter per unit volume of that matter Mass per volume

CHEMCIAL PROPERTIES

Chemical Properties Chemical property describes the behaviour of a substance as it becomes a new substance. Two types of chemical properties: Combustible/Flammable Reaction with Acid

Combustibility Combustibility describes the ability of a substance to react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy If a substance is combustible or flammable, it will burn when exposed to a flame Something that is not is nonflammable

Reaction with Acid The ability of a substance to react with acid May produce bubbles of gas and dissolving of metals
