Who We Are An inquiry into… KEY Fifth Grade September 24– November 10 An inquiry into… Interconnectedness of body systems in living organisms How the structure of expository text can influence societal systems Rights and responsibilities of being human KEY CONCEPTS: Connection Responsibility Function WHAT’S HAPPENING… Central Idea Who We Are Approaches to Learning Humans influence and shape the systems in the world around them. An inquiry into the nature of self; rights and responsibilities; and what it means to be human. Research Skills and Self-Management Skills

Students will strive to be: What You Can Do With Your Child at Home Talk about the Learner Profile Attributes and Attitudes Students will strive to be: Caring – We care about each other and the world in which we live. Knowledgeable- We explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance Balanced – We understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance. Empathy- Having the ability to understand and share in the feelings of another. Cooperation- Working together successfully to accomplish a goal. Reflect-Thinking deeply about our actions and work and how we can improve them. Students should demonstrate: Success Criteria for This Unit Students will be able to explain the many ways that humans influence and shape the world around them, and explain the responsibilities that power to influence the world entails. Students will create a visual representation of a genetically modified organism and its impacts on the environment and write an essay explaining how the organisms impacts the environment.
