Sustainable Agriculture By Elliot Moskat, Jenna Sanders, Westin Proehl

What is Sustainable Agriculture? Can be separated into 3 main goals: Environmental health Economic profitability Social and Economic Equity

Environmental Health Reduced water usage in agricultural processes Not dependant on non-renewable resources such as petroleum Methods such as strip farming reduces fertilizer runoff into water Less use of pesticides and burning to improve air quality

Economic Profitability/ Social and Economic Equity Makes better use of land and allows farmers to produce more with less land. Promotes labor because of new job opportunities in sustainable agriculture technology. Helps jump start economies in different developing countries/areas Stimulates consumerism because people buy the products.

Sustainable Agricultural Methods Contour Farming: Tilling at right angles to the slope of the land. Strip Farming: Alternating strips of closely sown crops like hay or wheat. Terracing: Constructing a level area at a right angle to the slope of a hill. Waterways: Depressions on sloping land where water collects. Wind breaks: Planting of trees or other plants to protect bare soil from the wind. Strip Farming
