Agenda Problems

Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals 101

Writing Chemical Formulae for ionic compounds with type II metals 1.) Write the cation and anion with their charges. For example: Iron (III) chloride Fe3+ Cl1-

Writing Chemical Formulae for ionic compounds with type II metals 2.) Add cations and anions until the charges equal zero. For example: Iron (III) chloride Fe3+ Cl1- Cl1-

Writing Chemical Formulae for ionic compounds with type II metals 3.) Total the number of cations and anions to determine the subscripts in the formula. For example: Iron (III) chloride Fe3+ Cl1- Cl1- Iron (III) chloride = FeCl3

Whiteboard Practice Write the chemical formula of iron (II) chloride. FeCl2

Whiteboard Practice Write the chemical formula of chromium (III) oxide. Cr2O3

Whiteboard Practice Write the chemical formula of tin (II) oxide. SnO

Whiteboard Practice Write the chemical formula of tin (IV) oxide. SnO2

Whiteboard Practice What information is told by the roman numeral in the name of an ionic compound? The charge on an atom that has the potential to form multiple ions.

Notes: Ionic Compounds w/Polyatomic Ions Pg.

Polyatomic Ions A polyatomic ion is a group of atoms. has an overall ionic charge. Some examples of polyatomic ions are NH4+ ammonium OH− hydroxide NO3− nitrate NO2− nitrite CO32− carbonate PO43− phosphate HCO3− hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate)

Some Compounds with Polyatomic Ions Copyright © 2009 by Pearson Education, Inc.

Polyatomic Ions to Memorize Name Formula Hydronium H3O+ Sulfite SO32- Ammonium NH4+ Nitrate NO3- Hydroxide OH- Nitrite NO2- Phosphate PO43- Chlorate ClO3- Peroxide O22- Chlorite ClO2- Carbonate CO32- Acetate C2H3O2- or CH3COO- Sulfate SO42- Must memorize ions by Wednesday’s quiz!!!!

Some Names of Polyatomic Ions The names of common polyatomic anions end in ate. NO3− nitrate PO43− phosphate with one oxygen less end in ite. NO2− nitrite PO33− phosphite

O S O Polyatomic Ions Why do polyatomic ions have an overall charge? O The polyatomic ion is drawn with brackets to show the ion is ONE unit O O S O 2- The charge of the polyatomic unit is written outside the bracket The charge is due to the ion having extra electrons Sulfate has 2 extra electrons resulting in a charge of -2

Naming Compounds with Polyatomic Ions The positive ion is named first, followed by the name of the polyatomic ion. NaNO3 sodium nitrate K2SO4 potassium sulfate Fe(HCO3)3 iron(III) bicarbonate or iron(III) hydrogen carbonate (NH4)3PO3 ammonium phosphite

Guide for Naming Polyatomic Ions Identify the cation and anion in the compound Name the cation, using a ROMAN NUMERAL, if needed. Name the polyatomic ion WITHOUT making any changes to the name. Write the name of the compound, cation first, anion last.

Example Problems Name the following compounds: Na2SO4 Mg(OH)2 NH4Cl Sodium Sulfate Mg(OH)2 Magnesium Hydroxide NH4Cl Ammonium Chloride Fe2(SO3)3 Iron (III) Sulfite

Whiteboard Practice Only write the problem given on your board. You will lose privileges and points for not following instructions.

Whiteboard Practice Match each formula with the correct name. A. MgS 1) magnesium sulfite MgSO3 2) magnesium sulfate MgSO4 3) magnesium sulfide B. Writing Formulas with Polyatomic Ions The formula of an ionic compound containing a polyatomic ion must have a charge balance that equals zero (0). Na+ and NO3− -> NaNO3 (net charge of zero) with two or more polyatomic ions, the polyatomic ion MUST be in parentheses. Mg2+ and NO3− -> Mg(NO3)2 NO3- Net charge of zero!!
