The Medieval Church, Economic Revival, Crusades, and the 100 Years War Chapters 8 and 9

The Church and Medieval Life 1 The Church and Medieval Life The church was a social place as well as a place of worship. Christian rituals and faith were part of the fabric of everyday life. Priests and clergy guided people on issues of values and morality. Also, people were required to receive the sacraments. Monks and nuns cared for the poor and sick, set up schools for children, and gave food and lodging to travelers.

Agricultural Revolution 1 Agricultural Revolution New farming technologies iron plow, harness, windmill, three-field system Increase in food production Population explosion Between 1000 and 1300, the population of Europe doubled.

1 Guilds In medieval towns, merchants and artisans formed associations called guilds. Merchant guilds appeared first. They dominated town life, passing laws, levying taxes, and making other important decisions. A craft guild was made up of workers in a particular occupation. To prevent competition, only a certain number of people could work in any trade.

A Call for a Crusade! “I extort you…to strive to expel that wicked race from our Christian lands…Christ commands it! Remission of sins will be granted for those going thither…Let those who are accustomed to wage private war wastefully even against believers go forth against infidels…Let those who have lived by plundering be soldiers of Christ; let those who formerly contended against brothers and relations rightly fight barbarians; let those who were recently hired for a few pieces of silver win their eternal reward.” November 1095 Pope Urban II

The Hundred Years War England and France fought for land in what is today northern France. Joan of Arc, a 17 year old peasant girl, inspires the French to victory. Joan is captured, put on trial and killed. She united the French and is considered a saint.
