LEADING THE HOMESCHOOL FAMILY

I. What does the Bible say about family order? A. Like with all of creation, God designed the family to have ORDER and ORGANIZATION  CHAOS occurs in any organization lacking clearly defined ROLES and GUIDELINES

1. He designated men as the HEADS of their homes. B. God designed the organization of the family with specific roles for its members 1. He designated men as the HEADS of their homes. 1 Cor 11:8-9; Gen 18:19; Josh 24:15; 1 Tim 5:8; Ex 6:14; 6:25; Num 1:4; 7:2; 31:26; 32:28; 36:1; Josh 21:1; 22:14; 1 Ki 8:1; 1 Chr 5:15, 24; 7:2, 7, 9, 11, 40; 8:6, 10, 13, 28; 9:9, 13, 33, 34; 15:12; 23:9, 24; 24:4, 6, 31; 26:21, 26, 32; ;27:1; 2 Chr 1:2; 5:2; 19:8; 23:2; Ezra 1:5; 2:68; 3:12; 4:2, 3; 8:1, 29; 10:16; Neh 7:70, 71; 8:13; 11:13; 12:12, 22, 23

2. Wives were created as HELP meets to their husbands Gen 2:18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a help meet suitable for him." Gen 2:15, 18; Eph 5:22, 23-24, 33; Col 3:18; Tit 2:4-5; 1 Pet 3:1-6; 1 Cor 11:3-9; 14:34-35; 1 Tim 2:9-15; Prov 31:10-31

3. Adam was created for a task Gen 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

4. Eve was created for relationship -- to help Adam in his calling Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help-meet for him. 1 Cor 11:8-9 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

II. What accountability comes with headship? A. Men -- more than women -- have the power to bring curses upon their families Ex 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, Ex 34:6-7 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."

B. Men -- more than women -- have the power to bring Divine blessings upon their families Deu 5:9-10 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. (Jer 32:18)

III. WHAT IS BIBLICAL HEADSHIP III. WHAT IS BIBLICAL HEADSHIP? Learning from Christ how to lead the family Eph 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. A. vs 23 The head assumes responsibility for oversight of the family

Headship does not mean dominance or oppression of family members Mat 20:25 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

2. Headship means shouldering the weight of running the home

3. A head does not passively provide for and maintain the household, but sets goals and makes plans for the family. Jer 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Ps 33:11)

4. A wise head does not dominate his helpmate -- he avails himself of her gifts Gen 2:18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a help meet suitable for him.“ 1 Cor 12:14-27 Now the body is not made up of one part but of many...18 But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

B. vs 25 The head expresses his love through sacrifice and INCONVENIENCE Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

Nothing was beneath our Lord Nothing was beneath our Lord. He sacrificed his power & position to come as a human Phil 2:6-8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross!

2. Jesus bore with our disrespect 1 Cor 13:7 [love] ...bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Mark 4:38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"

3. Sacrifice means heads risk loss, suffer, or endure inconvenience for the family a. Sacrifice is not just laboring to provide for our family 1 Tim 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

b. It is giving up our time and energy for the sake of relationship with the > We must decide they are worth listening to, discipling, recreating with > Inconveniencing yourself says ”You’re worth it”

C. vs 26-27 The head nurtures his family spiritually Eph 5:26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

1. As Christ cleanses his children from sin and renews their minds by his Word, a head must nurture his family spiritually (Heb 10:22; Titus 3:5)

2. The head’s responsibility includes oversight of the children’s Training and education Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. Psa 78:3 what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us. 4 We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done. 5 He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, 6 so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. 7 Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands. (See also Prov 4:1-2; 3:1; 7:2)

3. How can a head who works all day nurture his family spiritually? a. Direct instruction of the Word before or after work. John 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

b. Be an example to follow, ie: prayer, service, kindness, church involvement, etc. 1 Cor 11:1 Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

c. Cultivate a relationship of tender care 1 Th 2:11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God...

d. A head Points his family back to God whenever he is with them Deu 6:6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
