Welcome to BioMed/Forensics Ms. Scribner Eisenhower High School

What is BioMed/Forensics? Science credit in order to graduate A simulated “real-life” experience Lots of hands-on labs

It is Your Job! It’s your first day at the job you didn’t know you had! Good Salary!—aka grades Fair Boss!—Ms. Scribner Teamwork Skills a Must!

Scientific Instruments and Cells Company Divisions: Scientific Instruments and Cells Medical Science Forensics

Equipment Needed for Success: Pen or Pencil (everyday) 3-Ring Binder (at least 1½ inches 1 Glue Stick Scissors 1 Roll of Clear Tape OR 1 Roll of Masking Tape Homework Points given for each of these items.

Required Business Tactics: AKA Classroom Rules! 1. Respect yourself, others, and class materials. 2. Be punctual and prepared for class. 3. Follow all safety instructions. 4. Clean up after yourself. 5. Participate!!!

A New Start for a New Year at a New High School Be Respectful. Be Ready. Be Responsible Be Responsive.

Respectful Listen quietly when the teacher (or substitute teacher) is speaking, respect each others space, materials and feelings. No use of offensive language in class. Follow directions the first time they are given. Be recognized before making a comment or question, unless otherwise directed by the teacher (or substitute teacher).

Ready Arrive to class on time and be seated in assigned space when the bell rings Bring to class each day all previously assigned materials (notebook, text book, Assignments, Pen, Pencil, etc.); go to locker BEFORE class. Take care of bodily functions (restroom, eating, personal grooming) BEFORE arrival in class.

Responsible No food, drinks (except CLEAR water in a water bottle) or electronic devices in classroom. See student agenda for details Accept that coming to school is your job and with a job are accountabilities. Have your homework completed by due date (no late work) Do reading as assigned Complete assignments as instructed.

Responsive Attending this class is your Job Learning is a two-way street---Actively participate in class room discussions in a positive manner with comments relative to the subject at hand. Reflect on what you learned daily Recognize teachable moments daily.

DAILY ROUTINE—At ABC Technologies Copy Daily assignment in notebook. JOB PREP----BELLWORK assignment. (3‑5 min.) STAFF BRIEFING--- overview of day's lesson/work. (2‑3 min.) TASK---Lesson/work, lecture notes, AV notes, lab, etc.(approx 45 min.) Clean up/storage. Review of assignments given. (5 min.)

Personnel Policies Like Any job you have to obey the rules---these are called personnel policies

Cheating and Fraud

Cheating & Fraud!! Cases of cheating and/or plagiarism will result in NO SALARY (Zero)! This includes assessments, labs, and internet research. Group work will often be done, but this does not mean the work completed should be identical. You should adjust the ideas of a group into those of your own. THINK FOR YOURSELF! Parents will be called and emailed on Skyward on all cheating matters.

Attendance: Regular attendance is extremely important: Your absence affects your fellow employees Excused absence : Must complete work by yourself Unexcused absence without prior notification to boss (teacher): Not allowed to complete the lab and earn a 0 grade

Sick/Personal Leave: As soon as you return from your activity or illness check the “Excused Absence” binder for what you need to make up Work due the day you were gone: Write “Absent” at top and put in Homework Tray For each day you are absent, you have 1 day per day out to make up the work without penalty. Missed labs must be made up after school within 1 week sign up for a time on the calendar. Missed quizzes must be made up before/after school, or during Scribner within 2 days of return to class.

Late for Work? At a real job you are docked pay—in this class you are docked with a tardy notice. If you are not in your seat ready to begin class when the bell rings you WILL be counted tardy. EHS Tardy Policy enforced! Depending on how late you are you may have to come in after school to complete lab by yourself

Detentions Teacher-issued : 30 minutes to be served before or after school within the next to school days Must be completed that day or the next day or you will be referred to your Vice Principal.

Consequences 1st TIME: Verbal warning and/or "step‑out" conference (A step out" involves removal of the student from area to allow him/her a cooling off time and a private talk with the teacher) 2nd TIME: Discipline referral report made and telephone contact with parent. Discipline referral system now in place for offense and will be carried out to next level (Step 1 of discipline procedures pg 8 student agenda). 3rd + TIME: Discipline referral report to administrator combined with disciplinary action as noted from administrator. (Step 2, 3 & 4 of discipline procedures pg 8 student agenda). SEVERE CLAUSE: Immediately sent to appropriate vice‑principal.

Lab Routine Meet with assigned lab team and review the instructions for the lab. Collect equipment, etc. for project. Work on project. (approx 40 min.) Clean up/storage. Return to assigned seats and Record progress on project in work file and record log on work sheet evaluation of class time project progress. (10-15 min) Dismissed by instructor, NOT BELL. Must account for ALL lab equipment and have area cleaned up before all students dismissed.

Cooperative Teams Most work is completed as a group Everyone must contribute for success Frequent absentees or unreliable workers will have to complete the work alone Speak quietly with team members and on task subject only. Have necessary or assigned materials and finish task in time allotted. Remain in assigned group and area.

Classroom Discussion Open forum, let one person speak at a time on topic given. Have necessary note taking materials on your desk. Be alert--no sleeping or lack of participation tolerated

Audio Visuals No talking, while AV equipment in use. Raise your hand to be acknowledged during question/answer period. Take notes/fill out worksheet as required. Be alert‑‑no sleeping and focus on the presentation being given.

Storm or Fire Drill No talking during drill. Bring personal items only, i.e. purses, coats, etc. Line up single file by door and exit in orderly fashion. Fire Drill—Exit to outside door and walk to assigned area away from building.. Wait for “all clear” to return to building. Storm Drill‑‑follow teacher's instructions as given.

Performance As with any job your work is evaluated daily. Probation Quarterly performance reviews (progress reports) Semi-annual Performance Reviews (semester grades)

Performance Documentation Your Notebook! Your team must present each of their notebooks during probation period

Documentation Location Store your notebook in the assigned cabinet
