- Viola crashes on Illyria, and is told about Olivia and Duke Orsino  - Viola wants to work in Olivia’s court, but Olivia will not hear from strangers, so she decides to dress as a man (Cesario) so she can work in Orsino’s court.   Sebastian shows up in Illyria , and is mistaken for Cesario (Viola). - Orsino uses Viola (Cesario) as his ‘page’(messenger) to tell Olivia of his love. - Learns that Cesario is Viola, and declares his love for Viola Refuses to hear of love or marriage, until she meets Cesario.

Sebastian, who the audience and Viola believes to be dead, has been saved by a sea captain, Antonio Sir Andrew (loves Olivia) becomes jealous of Olivia’s affection for Cesario (Viola) Toby provokes a fight between Cesario (Viola) and Andrew Thinking Viola is Sebastian, Antonio steps in to defend Viola Antonio is arrested in Illyria, and is confused why Sebastian (Viola) will not help Later, Toby and Andrew mistake Sebastian for Cesario (Viola) Sebastian fights the men, which is interrupted by Olivia Olivia, thinking Sebastian is Cesario (Viola), asks Sebastian to marry her Although Sebastian does not know Olivia, and is confused, he sees that she’s rich and beautiful, so he agrees

Following the wedding, Duke Orsino and Viola arrive at Olivia’s place to declare Orsino’s love for Olivia Olivia tells Orsino of her marriage to Cesario (Sebastian) Orsino is furious with Cesario (Viola), who is confused. Sebastian arrives on scene, and everything becomes clear. Viola & Sebastian realize one another are alive Orsino realizes he loves Viola

Malvolio is locked up for being ‘mad’. - Maria writes a letter to Malvolio, pretending to be Olivia. - The letter tells Malvolio Malvolio that she (Olivia) loves him, and if he wants to be with her to smile, wear yellow stockings, and to refuse to tell anyone why - Malvolio wears the stockings for Olivia, who thinks he is acting ‘mad’ (crazy).

While in prison, Feste (the jester) pretends to be Sir Topas, a priest that declares Malvolio insane, despite Malvolio’s protests. - Feste, rethinking the joke, agrees to let Malvolio send Olivia a letter (requesting that he be released) - Eventually, at the end of the play, someone remembers Malvolio, and releases him. - Olivia Reveals to Malvolio that it was Maria’s hand writing, and the trick is revealed. - Malvolio is furious and storms off…
