Who I Will Become: A Life Map By: Dr. Manns

I WANT TO BE…… My desire is to become a teacher. I want to become a teacher because I love working with kids. Working with kids brings me joy and fulfillment. The main thing I want to do is make an impact on their lives so they can remember that their teacher cares about them and worked hard to teach them.

What I Am Doing….. To achieve this goal, I am maintaining an “A” average in school. After school, I help a family friend in her daycare. My responsibilities are teaching the kids and helping them go to the restroom and things like that. I also play games and spend time with them.

Educational Expectations To be in a teacher education program at a college, I must have good grades, a variety of involvement in programs and extracurricular activities, a good reputation as a person and a student, and the patience and willingness to work with kids of all levels

Educational Expectations I want to attend Georgia State University. The reason why is because Georgia State University has a very good teacher education program. To be admitted into Georgia State, I must first obtain a high school diploma, receive a 430 on SAT verbal and 400 on SAT mathematics or a 17 in both English and Math on the ACT and a GPA of 3.0.

Educational Expectations If I can’t attend Georgia State University, then I will try to attend Clayton State University. For more information on Clayton State-you can visit their website- http://www.clayton.edu/

Educational Expectations I believe that I am on the right track to achieve my goal of becoming a teacher. I am very involved in clubs in school so that makes me well rounded. I am a member of the cheerleading squad, L.I.G.H.T., and FCA. Along with that, I volunteer my time to work in the daycare so I can learn more about spending time with children. My cousin is a teacher so I also had the opportunity to visit the school with her. Last but not least, I make good grades. On my PSAT, I scored a 1000 on verbal and mathematics. If I keep studying and practicing, I can make the score that I need to get into Georgia State.

TIMELINE I will graduate from high school in the year of 2022 with a 3.5 GPA I will attend Georgia State University and graduate in the year of 2026. I am not sure if I will get an early childhood degree or a secondary education degree I will work in a school for either Clayton or Henry County beginning in 2027. My plan is to teach for a certain number of years and within those years, I would like to obtain my masters degree in education. Eventually I want to open my own school where I can run it like I want to run it but still follow the elements of my district

Interview I interviewed Dr. Manns for my research. She has been a teacher for 15 years. Originally, she had planned to become a lawyer but she started working in a daycare and fell in love with teaching. She said it is by the grace of God she made it out of high school. She played around until she went into the 12th grade and she regrets it. She should have been serious from the start which is why she is hard on her students about the importance of studying.

Interview Dr. Manns attended Atlanta Metropolitan College for two years and received her Associate’s Degree in Science. She then went on to Georgia State University and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Middle Childhood Education. She graduated from Lesley University with a Master’s Degree in Education and she obtained her PHD from Capella University.

Interview Dr. Manns

Interview Dr. Manns says a typical day for her is coming to work by 8:15, she writes the agenda for the day. She takes her planning time to plan with teammates or grade papers. Then she teaches 5 classes for the rest of the day. Most days it is smooth but other times students are showing a different side of themselves so Dr. Manns has to do the same thing as well.

Interview Dr. Manns says the benefits of her job is making a difference in her students’ lives, she also like the vacations that she gets. The drawbacks is the paperwork that has to be done, grading papers and entering grades, having to deal with behavior problems. Dr. Manns suggests that before you get into a career, make sure it is something that you really want to do.

Conclusion I learned that teaching is hard job but if it something that you really want to do, you can make it work. It takes a lot of dedication and determination to work with students. Some days will be good and other days you will wonder why did I get into this but at the end, it will be all worth it.
