WWI Gas Attacks

Gas Cont'd Casualties from gas: British 8,900 fatalities / 188,000 nonfatal. Germany 9,000 fatalities / 200,000 nonfatal.

Types of Gas: Chlorine Gas - a powerful irritant that can inflict damage to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs. Greenish color, can linger in soil for days. (First used by Germans at Ypres, 1915)‏ Phosgene Gas – more powerful than chlorine, took 24 hrs to kill, colourless, smelt like “moldy hay”. Mustard Gas – odorless, colorless - Mustard gas caused internal and external bleeding and attacked the bronchial tubes, stripping off the mucous membrane. Death in 4 weeks.
