Presentation transcript:

Adventurer of the Week coming soon! October 4, 2016 Mrs. Martin’s Newsletter Math: 4th graders will strengthen their understanding of addition and subtraction in math this week. As students get older, they are expected to become fluent with adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers. Students are able to apply their knowledge of place value and use multiple strategies to make sense of the standard algorithm. The most common mistakes are when to “carry” and when to “borrow”. Often times, students will switch the bigger bottom number with a smaller top number when subtracting. Please check out my website for online math practice. Social Studies: This week in Social Studies we will conduct our first Socratic Seminar on Modern Day Makah Whale Hunts. We will also be shifting our focus towards the end of the week from the Coastal People to the Plateau People of Washington State. We will be looking at the similarities between the two cultures and differences between the two. Reading: This week in reading we will be focusing on the elements of a story. We will be learning/reviewing the terms: plot, protagonist, antagonist, conflict, resolution, rising action, falling action and climax. We will be applying our new knowledge to the spooky story, The Ghost of Specter Elementary! Writing: Students will be working on writing an opinion paragraph.
