Section 1.8 Osmosis
Review: Last week we talked about Diffusion and Osmosis What is diffusion? The movement of a substance from an area of high concentration, to an area of low concentration
Review: Last week we talked about Diffusion and Osmosis What is osmosis? The movement of water from an area of high water concentration, to low water concentration
Review BUT! It’s a bit different when we have a solute dissolved in a solvent right? When there’s a solute involved, where does water want to move? Water always moves to where the solute concentration is highest!
Review Generally, if the solute concentration is higher OUTSIDE of the cell, what is going to happen to the cell? Will it shrink? Or grow?
Review What does the solute concentration have to be for the cell to not shrink or grow?
Section 1.8 Osmosis Turgor pressure – when the plant cell’s central vacuole and cytoplasm fills with water, it will create pressure that pushes against the cell wall. Remember cell wall makes it rigid? Well cell wall needs to work alongside the central vacuole in order for this to work
