Communism Communism-a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.

Economics of Communism Based on two main factors Central planning Government decided how much of a commodity would be produced. Equal Distribution In case of shortages, items distributed on a first come, first-serve basis. These are not distributed evenly, such as housing was determined by party loyalty

WWII IS OVER!!! Russia meets USA and England in Germany. Met on the island of Malta….. Russia promises to hold free elections Stalin knew if he held elections his communist governments would be voted out of power

Ring of Safety for Soviet Union Stalin wanted a ring of countries on the western side of the Soviet Union to protect them from another invasion from the West like what Germany did.

Power Struggle Begins Russia decides occupy the Eastern European countries and make them Satellites of Russia. Churchill coins the phrase “Iron Curtain” in reference to Russia setting up communist governments in these European countries.

America’s Response to Russia Truman Doctrine: “It must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.” How would we support free peoples? America would offer financial aid for European recovery!
