Andrew Jackson – People’s President Andrew Jackson NOTES Andrew Jackson – People’s President Jackson was the first president NOT from a WEALTHY Massachusetts or Virginia family. He grew up on the FRONTIER & fought in the REVOLUTIONARY War and the War of 1812. This HUMBLE background and his reputation as a WAR HERO helped make him a POPULAR president.

Jacksonian Democracy & The Spoils System Andrew Jackson NOTES Jacksonian Democracy & The Spoils System Jackson SPOKE OUT against control of the government by the WEALTHY, promised to look out for the COMMON MAN, and promoted the concept of MAJORITY RULE. This idea of spreading POLITICAL POWER to all the people became known as JACKSONIAN DEMOCRACY.

Jacksonian Democracy & The Spoils System Andrew Jackson NOTES Jacksonian Democracy & The Spoils System Jackson began his presidency by REPLACING many government officials with his own SUPPORTERS. This became known as the SPOILS SYSTEM.

Andrew Jackson NOTES Indian Removal Jackson believed that the GOVERNMENT had the right to decide where Native Americans could LIVE. When GOLD was discovered on CHEROKEE land in Georgia, white SETTLERS wanted to move into that land

Andrew Jackson NOTES Indian Removal Jackson passed the INDIAN REMOVAL ACT of 1830 and FORCIBLY REMOVED over 16,000 Cherokee to Oklahoma. Forced to MARCH in the cold, rain, and snow, ONE-FOURTH of the Cherokees DIED on the trip. This harsh journey became known as the TRAIL OF TEARS.

Andrew Jackson NOTES The Bank War & Panic In 1832 The SECOND NATIONAL BANK wanted to renew its charter for being a business. Jackson VETOED it as president, saying that it HURT the common man. The REPUBLICANS called Jackson a TYRANT. But the DEMOCRATS claimed Jackson was a DEFENDER of the people

Andrew Jackson NOTES The Bank War & Panic He put the bank out of business, but this created an economic crisis known as the PANIC of 1837. More banks went out of business, leaving people unable to get to their money. CITIES were hurt the most: people went HUNGRY & many lived on the STREETS.
