Why and how did Americans begin to migrate westward? Notes #18

During the early to mid-1800s, Americans began to migrate westward in search of freedom, land, and wealth.

For example: Mormons migrated to the Great Salt Lake Valley of Utah to escape religious persecution . . . Mormon leader Brigham Young

California Gold Rush (1848–1855) . . . and the discovery of gold caused the population in California (and other western territories) to grow. California Gold Rush (1848–1855)

Migration from east to west in the U. S Migration from east to west in the U.S. increased as a result of the transportation revolution, which allowed the East to become better connected to the West. Blucher engine Erie Canal

The construction of canals and roads caused trade and travel to expand between the East and the West.

As Americans continued to migrate westward, they came into conflict with Native Americans.

As a result of President Andrew Jackson’s policies, Native Americans were forcibly removed to areas west of the Mississippi River during the 1830s. President Andrew Jackson (1829–1837) Trail of Tears (1838); a result of Jackson’s Indian Removal Act (of 1830)
