Important Information October 22, 2018 Mrs. Offineer 5th Grade Teacher 540-658-6260 offineerlj@staffordschools.net The Offineer Observer Math SOL 5.1 & 5.2- We are still working on decimals place value and rounding to the nearest tenth, hundredth or thousandth. Later this week, we will be moving onto decimal and fraction equivalents. Multiplication is a big factor in a lot of the math topics we have covered recently and will continue to cover. Please make sure you take time to practice multiplication facts with your child each night because a lot of the students have been having difficulty with this. Language Arts SOLS 5.4 & 5.6- We have been working on summarizing, plot, and character traits and development. We will continue to work on those fiction skills, but we have moved onto direct instruction with nonfiction and nonfiction text features. The students have been practicing using a KWL as a way to understand lengthy nonfiction text and have a better understanding of the text. We have also been working a lot of prefixes and suffixes so that we can use the meanings of those prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of other unknown words. Science SOL 5.4-Our first science unit was scientific investigation, which we tested on last week. We are now working on matter. In this unit, students will learn about the different properties and states of matter, atoms, molecules, mixtures vs. solutions, and physical vs. chemical reactions. We will have our unit test on this next Tuesday, October 30th. Important Information Please continue to check your child’s agenda every night and sign your initials.
