WHEN SENIORS WERE ASKED WHAT THEY WISHED THEY WOULD HAVE KNOWN THEIR 10TH GRADE YEAR, THIS IS HOW THEY RESPONDED: “[That] Grades are important!” “I wish I had more volunteer and extracurricular activities to put on my resume for college. “That I would have researched careers more in-depth” “Do not procrastinate—if you have a 4 page paper don’t wait to the last day before it’s due!” “That I can get college credit in high school.”

TODAY’S AGENDA Graduation Plans/Transcripts GPA/Rank/Grades-What’s the big deal?? Clubs/Volunteer Activities How to get college credit

WHAT DO COLLEGES LOOK AT? Rank/GPA SAT/ACT Scores Extracurricular Activities Volunteer Experiences Essays Letters of Recommendation Request at least two weeks in advance Brag Sheet

RANK AND GPA Rank-how you compare to others in your class—I.e. 100/400 Rank includes: 4 core classes + 2 LOTE only Each semester grade is assigned a numerical value (2.0-6.0) and is averaged Top 10% Automatic Admission

EXAMPLES OF ADMISSION FACTORS TEXAS A&M TEXAS STATE This is from princeton review.com From Princetonreview.com

A Complete list of clubs can be found in the CLUBS ARE FOR EVERYONE! A Complete list of clubs can be found in the counselor’s office.

COLLEGE CREDIT-OH THE WAYS! AP Exams ACC Dual Credit Classes Articulated Credits

THE GREAT DEBATE-ACC VS. AP AP Exams Both Pros: Credit is earned at ACC upon successful completion at ACC More widely accepted No limit to number of AP Classes you can take Count as weighted GPA Cons: Highest grade you can receive is a 95% Can only take 2 classes per semester You have to pay for textbooks for the class Fee required for test (~$80) Must receive a 3+ for potential college credit

HOW DO I ENROLL IN AN ACC CLASS? Meetings will be offered in the spring—you must attend You will have to complete an online application You will have to meet testing requirements You will have to go through the entire testing process

WHAT’S NEXT? Use PSAT data to prepare for Junior PSAT Research career interests and colleges Get Involved! Volunteer! Select courses that will provide college credit Earn the best grades you can Begin building your resume Begin building a file for your college search.
