Influences on your healthy active lifestyles Lesson 2

Today our lesson objectives are: All students will be able to identify the main factors that affect involvement in physical activity. Most students will be able to explain why these factors affect participation. A few students will challenge these factors giving their own opinion on them.

Starter Think of 5 sporting role models and then give reasons why they are considered as such.

Role Models Class Discussion – Who are the role models you have chosen? What differences are there in the role models different people have chosen? Are all of the role models famous? If so why? Can you think of any non-famous role models?

These are people whose actions are emulated by others These are people whose actions are emulated by others. Their success can inspire others to take part in activity. It does have its responsibilities e.g. not to take drugs or to get into fights. Can you think of a recent disgraced role model?

Influence No 1. - People Discuss with the person next to you what made you get into your first choice sport? People often tend to choose to take part in the same activity as their friends or family. Family – Children are often encouraged to play a certain sport or support the same team. Friends – The influence of your peers can be huge, it is much easier to succeed in any activity with the support of peers.

Influence No. 2- Image Fashion – having the “right equipment”. List some examples of these. Sales of equipment is influenced by the time of year – think of examples with your partner. Media coverage – TV and the wider media can have a really positive effect e.g. During Wimbledon, the London Marathon, Olympics.

Influence No. 3- Cultural Factors Disabilities – Resources and opportunities are increasing but more availability is still needed for people with disabilities at a local level. Age – Typically it is good to start sports young. As people get older work, family responsibilities as well as health problems may prevent adults from participating in physical activity. Gender – Although nearly all activities are more or less open to both genders, some are more bias towards another – discuss with your partner and give examples. The media can have a big influence on this. Race – Ethnic background can play a part in the activity you play. An example is there are proportionally fewer black tennis players or golfers than footballers. Quiz question! Who is Mia Ham?

Influence No. 4- Resources Availability of facilities and resources plays a role. Location – what is locally available to people? Access facilities – public transport good parking, bike and walking paths. Time – Open in evenings, weekends, during holidays – WHY?

Influence No. 5 – Health and Wellbeing Illness can cause individuals not to take part. People with asthma might find it harder to take part in some activities which involve a lot of running, swimming might be better for them.

Influence No. 6- Socio-Economic Most activities have some costs – what might these be? Hire of facilities, lessons, equipment, shoes, travel. If people cannot afford to take part it is the socio-economic status that has influenced them. Their status relates to their current situation in society, e.g. Employed or looking for work. This status might also influence the type of sport they watch. Which sports are relatively cheap to participate in and which are more expensive – make a list.

Activity Think of your main or favourite activity (if you have a few then pick one!) and then relate 3-4 of the factors we have looked at today that have affected your choice of activity. E.g. I was influenced by my family and started to play netball because my mother is a netball umpire and my older sister played for the local team. I was always brought to training sessions even when I was too young to play.

Homework 2 Students’ research what opportunities are available to become involved in or remain involved in within a 5 mile radius of their home.   Local Centre (Name and Location) Opportunities Extension work for A/A* target students to look into: What is available for leadership, officiating and volunteering?

Plenary As a class lets make a list of 10 different sports or activities. Then you have to think of one factor which might influence participation in that sport. Write down that factor on your white board and be ready to explain why you chose that factor.
