Part 2: Placemat Have person B draw a box in the centre of your group’s chart paper. Person B then draws lines out from the centre so that there are enough spaces for each person in your group to have a spot to write on the placemat (the centre stays empty for now) Wait for further instructions…

Placemat A word about the content … Each person finds his/her own spot on the placemat. Consider the following three quotations… what connections do you see between the three? A word about the content … Write some ideas in your own space on the placemat (NO TALKING to your neighbours!)

Placemat Now, turn your placemat counter clockwise a quarter turn, so that you can read your neighbour’s response. Feel free to add ideas. Turn the placemat again and read the next person’s ideas.

Placemat Once everyone in your group has had a chance to read everyone’s ideas, discuss and synthesize your connections. Reach consensus, and write one connection in the centre of your placemat! 13

Part 2: Active Discussion vs. Dialogue Text-based dialogue “Save the Last Word for Me”

“Save the Last Word” Read individually. Highlight /mark 2 or 3 phrases or ideas. Person A – share one of your items, but do not comment on it. Group members comment on the item in round-robin fashion. (No cross talk!) Person A then shares his or her thinking about the item and gets – "The Last Word". Repeat the pattern around the table until all every group member has had the opportunity to share one item.

Part 2: Active Jigsaw OR Home/Expert Groups You will be directed to gather with re-formatted groups which are semi-structured. Gushee’s FIVE Virtues of the professor at a Christian University

Jigsaw Instructions Move to your expert group – you will be given an “expert” envelope which contains a graphic organizer and a “virtue” reading ! A’s – Spiritual Virtue B’s– Relational Virtue C’s – Intellectual Virtue D’s – Social Virtue E’s – Personal Virtue Read your group’s excerpt silently to yourself. Define your group’s virtue; prepare a 30-second spiel to share with your home group (you can write it on your graphic organizer!) If your group chooses you can use the Place Mat process to define the group’s virtue. Return to your home group; share your insights, listen as others share theirs, and complete your graphic organizer! We hopefully have 10 EXPERT groups of five or six people each. In the Jigsaw envelope, you will find: A “letter” Card – have one person hold this up so other “experts” can find their table. One graphic organizer for each person. A section of text on one of Gushee’s five “virtues” – one copy for each person.
