Intro to Chemistry and Atoms What is Chemistry ? Well what does matter have to have? Is air matter? Ask students what is needed for matter to be matter. Well what does matter have to have?

Have mass and take up space! You all have mass and certainly take up space (right?) Joke.

How could we check if you take up space? How could we check if you have mass? Talk about weight. Make mirror joke.

Atomic Structure* The atomic structure is the way atoms are ordered. All atoms are similar in terms of organization.

Proton +* Positively charged, sub-atomic particles that are located in the nucleus.

Non-charged, sub-atomic particles that are located in the nucleus. Neutron* Non-charged, sub-atomic particles that are located in the nucleus.

Electron -* Negatively charged, sub-atomic particles that are located in the electron cloud, orbiting the nucleus.

Protons are positive / neutral / negative. Atoms Atoms Warm up: Protons are positive / neutral / negative. Protons are inside / outside the nucleus. Neutrons are positive / neutral / negative. Neutrons are inside / outside the nucleus. Electrons are inside / outside the nucleus. The overall charge of the nucleus is positive / neutral / negative. 7. Electrons are smaller / larger than protons.
