We are learning to… Describe Adolf Hitler’s Early Life and experience of WWI I can… Build up detailed notes from a written and visual source (all) Complete an observation quiz (all) Use film evidence to support or oppose facts (extension)

You will need these notes for our next task! 2. School life 1. Parents Adolf Hitler 3. After school 4. World War One Task One: As we move through the lesson, take notes on the childhood and life of Hitler on a mind map. You will need these notes for our next task!

Key social subjects skill What is Note-Taking? Note-taking is not copying out! Note taking is not taking notes ‘in your head’

1. Adolf was born to Alois and Klara Hitler on 20th April 1889 in Braunau, Austria Both his parents came from poor backgrounds His parents had five children but only Adolf and half sister Paula survived Hitler’s parents were related His father was very strict and wanted Hitler to become a civil servant like him Some historians say Hitler was a bit of a ‘Mummy’s Boy’

Hitler's House - link House during Nazi era Clip shows plans to knock house down

The only subjects he really liked were history and art Hitler was quite bright at primary school, but there was more competition at secondary The only subjects he really liked were history and art He was obsessed with stories about war, weapons and victory He was quite a talented artist Hitler liked to boss other children around and give rules So he had very few friends 2.

Can you spot Adolf Hitler in his school picture?

3. Hitler’s father wanted him to go in to an office job and make money Hitler wanted to go to art school When his father died, Hitler received money in his will and moved to Vienna, Austria’s capital He was rejected from Art School His mum died in 1907 of cancer Hitler did a few odd jobs for the next few years – painting postcards mainly He slept rough at times 3.

Paintings by Adolf Hitler as an adult He mainly copied other people’s work on to postcards and sold them to tourists

Hitler was called up for Austrian National Service - but rejected as he was unfit for duty By 1913, Hitler had moved to Munich, Germany Joined the German Army when WWI started Hitler often acted as a messenger, a very dangerous job Injured by Shrapnel Injured by Mustard Gas He won the Iron Cross bravery medal Hitler cried when Germany lost 4.

Observation Quiz – Answers! What did Hitler’s father keep in his garden? Bees – he kept bees after he retired What does Hitler’s mother call her son (nickname)? Addy Who does Hitler blame for him being homeless and unemployed In Vienna? The Jews, The Poles How does Hitler react when ‘Krieg’ or ‘War’ is announced? Delighted – described as one of the happiest times of his life What rank is Hitler promoted to in the army? Corporal How does Hitler get on with his fellow soldiers in the war? He is unpopular, teased a lot.

History in Popular Culture Task When we use films to learn about the past we need to be careful as there are often inaccuracies! Task: Read through the facts below and decide whether the film represented them accurately or not. What evidence do you have to support your answer? Hitler’s father died of a heart attack during a visit to a pub. The doctor who treated Hitler’s mother for cancer was Jewish. Hitler was rejected from Art school after failing the entrance exam. Hitler loved animals especially dogs and was a vegetarian. Hitler was anti-Semitic (did not like Jewish people.) Film shows father dying at home No. 4 is true however the film depicts Hitler as cruel to his dog and he beats the dog in the trenches – there is no evidence to support this The rest of the statements are shown to be true in the film

What have I learned? Hitler’s Early Life You are going to pick three aspects of Hitler’s early life that interest you. You should write a paragraph on each one. These should be made up of full and detailed sentences based on your learning and research. The piece of writing should be a minimum of one full jotter page. Choose THREE from; Parents & Early Life School Days After School World War One Anti Semitism Any other relevant aspect
