Course Choice - S4 Computing Science Learning Intentions Success Criteria I will learn how to / be able to: Identify and describe the purpose, aims and benefits of the Nat 4/5 Computing Science course. Be able to identify and describe the purpose, aims and benefits of the Nat 4/5 Computing Science course. Identify skills for learning, life and work. Be able to identify skills for learning, life and work and link/ relate these skills to the Lochgelly High School Core Skills. Identify a range of Computing Science and IT career opportunities. Be able to effectively perform a search using a search engine for careers associated with Computing and IT. Be able to create a simple website in HTML which includes text and images and makes use of a range of tags such as: H1, H2, P, IMG.

S4 Computing Science

Purpose, Aims & benefits of the course Computing plays an increasingly important role in our work, homes and leisure activities. is vital to everyday life; it shapes the world in which we live and its future. Computer scientists play key roles in meeting the needs of society today and for the future, in fields which include science, communications, entertainment, fashion, education, business and industry. Our society needs more computer scientists and for all young people to have an informed view of the IT industry and its contribution to the economy. By studying Computing, YOU can make a difference. You can experiment with great ideas and people will benefit from what you build. For example you can build useful computer programs or apps for smart phones. The relevance of Computing Science will never stop expanding!!

Famous Computer Scientists Marissa Mayer – President and CEO of Yahoo! – 2012 – present. Meg Whitman, Hewlett Packard CEO – 2011 – present. Larry Page – Google’s found CEO. Alan Turing – British pioneering computer scientist who formalised some of the main ideas/ concepts behind computing.

Famous Computer Scientists (cont) Mark Zuckerberg – Co founder of Facebook and its current Chief Executive Officer. Steve Jobs – Co founder of Apple. He was the chief executive of Apple. Bill Gates – co founder of the Microsoft Corporation.

Main aims of the course To Allow Young People to: Develop knowledge and understanding of key facts, ideas and emerging technologies in Computing Science. Communicate clearly using appropriate terminology. Create digital solutions to a variety of problems, making use of a variety of media types. Develop a range of skills which can be applied to a variety of subjects. Develop problem-solving skills. Develop team working skills. Develop organisation skills. Develop an awareness of the impact of computing and information technology in changing and influencing our environment and society.

Assessment A coursework Assignment/ Project – worth 50 marks. A written examination paper – worth – 110 marks. Various written and practical tests throughout the year to assess progress.

Course progression Computing Science is to be offered at National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels in the Senior Phase. The entry point on this route depends on performance in S3. At all levels, the courses are challenging and enjoyable. You will get lots of “hands on” experience of a wide variety the most up-to-date software, and will use their creative skills throughout to produce a range of digital solutions. Remember! Computing Science skills are essential for the future!

Career opportunities The course will prepare you for careers or further study involving Computing Science. It will also provide you with the life skills to enable you to be successful in any future employment. In Further Education Computing Science is highly regarded as an entry qualification for College or University. Lesson Activities Conduct some research using a search engine of your choice to identify a range of career opportunities associated with Computing Science/ IT. Communicate your findings by creating a simple web page/ web site in HTML. Your web page/ web site must contain the following HTML tags: 1. H1, H2, P, Img. We will finish the lesson with a discussion about the different career options identified.
