The Endocrine and Reproductive systems

The Endocrine System Function … Made up of … Broadcast messages throughout the body Made up of … Glands that release their messages throughout the body Endocrine glands release the hormones directly into the bloodstream

Hormones What are they? Chemicals that travel through the blood stream and affect the activities of other cells.

How Hormones Work Hormones get released into the blood stream by endocrine glands Hormones then attach to specific receptors on specific cells Target cells – cells that have receptors for a particular hormone

Control of the Endocrine system It is controlled by a feedback mechanism that functions to maintain homeostasis Just like a thermostat in your house

The Reproductive system Function … Produces, stores, and releases specializes sex cells known as gametes Puberty begins when the hypothalamus signals the pituitary to produce FSH and LH both hormones that affect the gonads

The Male Reproductive system Made up of … testes, epididymis, vas deferens, urethra, and the penis Function … Produce and deliver sperm

The Female Reproductive system Made up of … Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and the vagina Function … To produce eggs, prepare the female’s body to nourish a developing embryo
