Welcome to Honors English 9! As you enter the room, Please take a copy of the course syllabus, the student questionnaire and have a seat at a table with either four or five total people.

Welcome to Honors English 9! Why did you come to uais, and what do you hope to get out of this school, and/or—if more appropriate—get away from? Why did you or didn’t you like 8th grade english? What do you hope Honors English 9 will be like? Name one thing you hate that you wish your loved, and name one thing you love that you wish you hated. Why?

Ordered Sharing 1. The teacher poses a open-ended question. 2. Each table thinks about the question. Someone begins by sharing their response. No one should interrupt the speaker. 3. Rotating clockwise, each person tries to build upon the ideas of the first speaker or share a different response. 4. A person may initially pass on answering but must answer when others have finished. 5. When finished, you can then respond to everyone else.

Ordered Sharing Why is English class a required part of education, and what skills does an effective English class produce in its students? More specifically, If fiction is the study of imaginary events and people, why bother studying it? What do you think might be real and valuable to gain from it?

We Study English to… learn to become an effective communicator Become more knowledgeable develop critical thinking skills learn about others who are different from us Understand the human condition and, as a result, ourselves appreciate the ambiguity of life Empathy, empathy, empathy!!!
