Judaism, Christianity, Islam were all founded in the Middle East All three consider Jerusalem as a holy city

FOUNDING OF ISLAM

Prophet Muhammed Born in the city of MECCA (570 AD) Orphaned at 6, raised by his relatives Became a caravan trader, business manager at 25 for Khadijah

The Revelation At 40, God spoke to Mohammed through the Angel Gabriel that he was a messenger of God

Mohammed began to teach to Meccans that… Allah was the one and only God He quickly gained many followers MUSLIMS, “one who has submitted”, to this belief ISLAM “submission to the will of Allah”

Mohammed quickly gained many followers which made many wealthy people uneasy and jealous So….

Hijrah Mohammed and his followers fled to MEDINA, a city located North of Mecca in 630

In Medina, Mohammed Gained political influence Drew in many more converts Became a military leader He returned to MECCA (630) where many Meccans pledged loyalty and converted to Islam. By the time of his death at age 62, he unified the Arabian Peninsula under Islam

MONOTHEISM Islam is MONOTHEISTIC – belief in one God (“Allah” in Arabic)

5 Pillars of Islam Duties of a Good Muslim

1. Shahada (Faith) Declare one’s faith daily “There is no God but Allah and Muhammed is the Messenger of Allah”

2. Salat (Prayer) Pray 5 times daily facing Mecca

3. Zakat (Charity) Give money to the less fortunate

4. Sawm (Fasting) FAST during daylight in the holy month of RAMADAN RAMADAN is the month when Mohammed received the Revelation Eid Al-Fitr

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage) Make a PILGRIMAGE to Mecca once in a lifetime, money and health permitting
