An Introduction to PPEC How to write an amazing paragraph

An Introduction to PPEC You will be answering your homework questions in the PPEC format. PPEC is a strategy to write good paragraphs A paragraph is a group of sentences (4-6) on one topic Each sentence only contains 1 idea A paragraph is always indented at the beginning For your paragraph write in complete, conventionally, and grammatically correct sentences

PPEC It stands for: P - Point P - Proof E - Explain C - Conclude

P - Point Your first sentence of a paragraph should introduce your main idea. Often rewording or using part of the question will help you do this easily. Always be specific in your first sentence by avoid vague pronouns (he, she, they, it etc); instead use specific names if possible. Do not start your answer with “Yes” or “No”; these are implied within your carefully constructed response. Do not start your sentence with a conjunction (and, because, but, or so) these are better used later to join ideas Make sure you answer each aspect of the question in the order asked to help organize your thoughts

P- Point Example Question: When and why do students have to go to class? Point: High school students typically have to go to class Monday through Friday to gain knowledge and prepare for their future careers.

P - Proof Whenever possible use very specific details or a direct quotation from your source (story, article, poem, novel, play, movie etc.) to support the point you are making. Thus helping to prove your point and demonstrate your knowledge of the material.

P- Proof Example continued from the above question and point Students become balanced learners to acquire valuable knowledge in varying subjects like: English, Math, Science, History, Geography, Technology, and the Arts, to prepare for their post-secondary destination.

E - Explain Explain how your specific example, evidence, fact or quotation proves the posed question. Again be specific in your answer Demonstrate connections between concepts and ideas 2-3 sentences in length

E - Explain Example continued from the above question, point and proof Grade 9 and 10 students take general overviews of subjects, while senior students take specific subjects in greater depth. These subjects are often requirements on post-secondary institution applications and create a foundation of knowledge to build upon; so, students must attend class regularly to keep up with the material taught.

C - Conclude This sentence wraps-up your ideas and ties together any loose ends. Relate back to your point sentence Be specific Edit your paragraph for spelling, grammar, diction, and conventions to ensure it is your best work Often transition words help to conclude smoothly

C - Conclude Example continued from above Therefore, it is imperative that students attend classes on a regular basis to ensure the development of their knowledge and skill acquisition.

The Entire Paragraph Question: When and why do students have to go to class? PPEC Answer: High school students typically have to go to class Monday through Friday to gain knowledge to prepare for their future careers. Students become balanced learners to acquire valuable knowledge in varying subjects like: English, Math, Science, History, Geography, Technology, and the Arts, to prepare for their post-secondary destination. Grade 9 and 10 students take general overviews of subjects, while senior students take specific subjects in greater depth and detail. These subjects are often requirements on post-secondary institution applications and create a foundation of knowledge to build upon; so, students must attend class regularly to keep up with the material taught. Therefore, it is imperative that students attend classes on a regular basis to ensure the development of their knowledge and overall skill acquisition.
