OBSERVATIONAL DRAWING Techniques

BLIND CONTOUR EXERCISE

Pencil or pen never leave the surface. One continuous line Pencil or pen never leave the surface. One continuous line. Your eyes remain on the object being drawn and NOT on your paper.

Main idea is to focus on hand-eye coordination and to improve your ability to draw what YOU SEE, not what you think.

YOUR TURN! One person per table will grab 2-3 items off the counter. Ten (10) minutes of blind contour drawings of the chosen objects. You may switch objects w/ other tables. Each sketch must take up no less than half a page. Do NOT pick up your pencil. Do NOT look at your paper! Think of it as a game!

NEGATIVE SPACE EXERCISE

Negative space is JUST AS IMPORTANT as positive space.

The focus will be on the negative space (irregular shapes between and around chair) and NOT the chair, itself. Draw ONLY the negative space. Do not cheat!

Draw ONLY the negative space. Take up the entire page Draw ONLY the negative space. Take up the entire page. Shade in the negative space when finished.

Same as before. Draw and shade in ONLY the negative space.

SIGHTING AND ANGLE EXERCISE

Create one, FULL PAGE, accurate drawing of your still-life objects using sighting and angling techniques. No shading; only a clean contour line drawing. Make sure objects overlap.
