CPC -involves in communist movements in Europe -educated in Moscow -joins the ranks of the CPC -war hero and dignitary of the new "republic" -successful 4th in command -practical and effective; conquers tibet

Exile -Cultural revolution -Criticize Deng Campaign -Tianamen Incident of 1976 -removed from all leadership positions -exiled to southern china -worked in a factory

Change in ideology -"black cat" quote -failure of Great Leap Forward causes doubts -Mao's return; Deng's exile (remained a party member); Red guard -after 5 years he is reinstated as First Vice-Premier

Rise to Power -builds railroads in southern china -oversees 1/3 of the nation -catches Mao's eye as loyal and a good leader -supports Mao in 100 flowers and anti-rightist -begins to see failure of Great Leap Forward -40 million farmers dead
