NATIONALISM AND NEGOTIATION Causes of WWI

OUTCOME 3.1.1 3.1.1 Know, understand and be able to express examples of power relationships and rivalries between European nations, as causes of the First World War (1860s to 1914).

Understanding geography Text page758- 759: Answer the following: HUMAN ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS: What made it unlikely that World War I battles would be fought in Great Britain? LOCATION: Where were the countries of the Triple Entente located in relation to the countries of the Triple Alliance?

MILITARISM and Growing Fear The aggressive preparation for war. Industrialization ---new methods of shipbuilding, iron, steel and chemicals for warfare. Growth of armies and navies heightened in Europe (more than double in France and Germany) Conscription: military draft (forced to join the military)

MILITARISM Growing European divide (over power)led to an arms race. Britain, France, and Germany competed for trade and influence over seas. Naval Arms Race added tension: 1906, the British introduce the battleship ‘Dreadnaught’ with the Germans follow by building their own battleships. Austria-Hungary and Russia want control of the Balkan States (Kosovo, Greece, Serbia, etc.) in southeast Europe.

alliances A bond or connections between states, parties, or individuals; an association to further the common interests of the members Rivalries over colonies and trade was growing Alliances in Europe in 1914: Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy Triple Entente: France, Great Britain, Russia

In the early 20th century the Balkans (Albania, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Greece) were a hotbed of crises that was fueled by Nationalism in an attempt to seek independence.

IMPERIALISM Imperialism : to rule over a people or place through colonization, military power, economic or political power. Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries and makes them subject to their rule.

IMPERIALISM By 1900 the British Empire extended over five continents and France had control of large areas of Africa. Rise of industrialism = countries need new markets. Land 'owned' by Britain and France increased the rivalry with Germany who had entered the scramble to acquire colonies late and only had small areas of Africa.

NATIONALISM Nationalists: people who believe that people of a ‘single’ nationality should unite under a single government. Loyalty and devotion to a nation; promoting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on advancement of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or groups Goal of Nationalists? Create a Nation-State. What is the bond that creates a Nation-State? Nationality, language, culture, religion, territory, etc.

More ALLIANCES… Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Bosnia. Austria-Hungary declares war against Serbia for the assassination and declared war June 28, 1914. Russia supported Serbia Germany supported Austria. France supported Russia. August 4th, Germany invaded Belgium (neutral) on their way to France. Britain had promised to defend Belgium; therefore they declared war on Germany.
