Semiotics Analysis By Alex Trowell

Clockwork Orange - Image

Analysis (250 words) To start the analysis of this 1970’s film poster you have to look at what technique the designer has used for the image. I think the poster emulates a simplistic impression on the viewer this suggests that there perhaps is some mystery surrounding the film with also the context of the text adding to the confusion and mystery. Next, you have to look at what effect the technique has had on the viewer in my opinion the design suggests that the viewer should delve into the film with the small image in the centre providing some insight of the dark theme of the film. With the main character on the poster looking directly at the audience and an image of another eye as well within the triangle, it does evoke feelings of fear and big brother esque paranoia. You have to also look deeper and think what else the poster could symbolize with Alex the main character holding a sharp object the design makes it feel three dimensional as if it's coming out from the page suggesting the connotation to the audience that this character has no morals and just wants to inflict evilness on the world. Finally, one more concept to analyse is an alternative viewpoint and looking at this poster a number of times you could also put an argument across that Alex could be reaching out to the audience to help him on his missions of ‘Ultra-Violence’. This symbolises engagement and interaction with the audience creating a togetherness within a dark atmospheric movie.
