Vocab Unit 6 VOTE

Review Cultural Identity Texts What moves/techniques do you see the writer doing? Ex: Diction/Imagery/Speaker How does the piece reveal the speaker’s identity? What are some values/beliefs that the speaker has?

Writing Tips Telling Sentence: It was an unusual cat. Showing Sentence: With yellow eyes glowing red, long, black fur that stood on end, a mouth full of sharp pointed teeth that emitted a yowl like a tiger, I knew that the small animal before me was no ordinary cat. Some suggestions from what we’ve read: Begin where you end Repetition Use of metaphor Powerful word choice Parallel structure (Examples – next slide)

Examples of Parallel Structure “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” (The Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens) “What the hammer? what the chain?/In what furnace was thy brain?/What the anvil? what dread grasp/Dare its deadly terrors clasp?” (The Tyger, William Blake) “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal…I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character…I have a dream today.” (I Have a Dream, Martin Luther King, Jr.)

Final Thoughts (If time) Index Card Response (to turn in) I came to class expecting… I learned… One question I have is…
