Paging System Operation Overview Repeater Radio Channel Using 2 Frequencies Frequency 1 Used to Talk from Radio to Base Frequency 2 Used to Talk from Base to Radio Each User Must be Line of Sight with Base Enhanced Range Frequency 1 Duplex is possible without a repeater, but this is not often used in public safety (few exceptions). Frequency 2 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 6 6

Page Direct From One Tower Radio Link Control Radio Paging Site Court House or Fire Station Users selects code and tower for department being paged. Send page same way as if paging direct from station. Only difference is the channel selected on the base radio. 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 7

Paging System Operation Overview Simulcasting The same information is transmitted on the channel at the same time from multiple locations. Central Transmitter Remote Site Microwave Link Remote Site Remote Site 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 8

Paging System Operation Overview Why Simulcast? These Pages Only Sent Once, Not Five Times Nightly Pager Test Storm Watch County Wide Messages Department Members Alerted When Away from Home Area Build Base Infrastructure for Digital Paging 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 10

Paging System Operation Overview Paging Sequence Each page will be sent simulcast first Second page will be direct from the towns main coverage tower. Quasqueton and Brandon will have a store and forward systems to fill in coverage holes in town. 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 11

Sending a Page, Fire Stations Shut off scan and select the “PAGE DIR” channel on the radio remote. Lift hand set from radio remote. (Page will not be sent with handset on hook) Enter the pager code desired from the list on the encoder. Press the “Page” key (#button) on the encoder to the send page. Press the PTT button on the handset and speak your message after the tones have been sent. Press the “Clear” key (*button) on the encoder to clear the code. 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 12

Paging System Operation Overview Pagers vs Handhelds Pager Specifically designed to receive and decode two tones Monitors just the channel used for paging Two channel pages check paging channel many times per second. 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 23

Paging System Operation Overview Pagers vs Handhelds Handheld Designed to receive and decode many different tone schemes. Monitors many channels when on scan If paging channel is priority channel may check it only once every 3-5 seconds. The first paging tone is only 1 second long. 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 24

If Handheld is Used as a Pager? To Increase Chance of Page Being Captured DO NOT USE SCAN! Only way to ensure that the complete tones are captured is to stay on the paging channel. Dual Watch (If radio has this feature). Only two channels scanned, increases chance page will be captured. If a Handheld is used it must meet the radio system specifications so it can decode the tone patterns used. 2/22/2013 Paging System Operation Overview Revision - 25
