Welcome and Announcements Cambridge Chimes Welcome and Announcements Greeting Each Other Ringing of the Bell

Prelude “Introduction & Allegro’” ~Handel Lighting of the candles

*CALL TO WORSHIP AND INVOCATION L: We come before God this day, the One who calls and names each of us as a much-loved child.

P: Here in these moments together, we would recognize God dwelling in us. L: We come to the Christ this day, the One whose love is the foundation of our lives.

P: Here in this place of grace and forgiveness, we understand the One who calls us to faith. L: We come to the Spirit this day, the One who strengthens our unity.

P: Here with those who are our sisters and brothers, we would seize the opportunities to learn, to grow, and to serve.

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.1 The church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation by water and the word;

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.1 From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died.

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.2 Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth, Her charter of salvation one Lord, one faith, one birth;

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.2 One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.3 Though with a scornful wonder this world sees her oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed,

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.3 Yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up: “How long?” And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.4 Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, She waits the consummation of peace forevermore;

*HYMN #442 “The Church’s One…” v.4 Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest, And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) God of constant love, fools say in their hearts: “There is no God.” How often, O Lord, are we the fools who acknowledge you with our lips, but deny you with our actions?

How often do we act as if you sleep, thinking that you do not know what we do? How often do we seek to hide our sin and brokenness, rather than confess them?

How often do we cause others to stumble, when we act hypocritically in our faith? Forgive us for these and all our shortcomings, Merciful One. Strengthen and encourage us to walk faithfully with you.

(silence is observed for individual reflection and prayer)

ASSURANCE OF PARDON L: Through the power of the Holy Spirit within us, God is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20) So, hear and believe the good news that in Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

P: Thanks be to God for love and forgiveness. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON P: Thanks be to God for love and forgiveness. Amen.

PROCLAIMING THE WORD SCRIPTURE READING: John 6:1-14

After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples.

Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, ‘Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?’ He said this to test him, ‘Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to

get a little.’ One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, ‘There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?’ Jesus said, ‘Make the people sit down.’ Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down,

about five thousand in all about five thousand in all. Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, ‘Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.’

So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, ‘This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.’

L: This is the Word of the Lord. P: Thanks be to God!

*HYMN #391 “Take My Life and Let it Be’” v.4 Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold; Take my intellect, and use every power as Thou shalt choose, every power as Thou shalt choose.
