Important! If you multiply or divide of an inequality by a negative number, you must reverse the inequality to make the statement true. Example: Solve the inequality -12x > 84. Divide both sides by -12. > x > -7 Check solution: x can equal -5 since -5 > -7. -12(-5) > 84 60 > 84, but this is FALSE! Since x was divided by a negative number, we must change > to <. So x < –7 is the answer.

Caution! Do not change the direction of the inequality symbol just because you see a negative sign. For example, you do not change the symbol when solving 4x < –24.
