Population Issues of Europe

The big issue is lack of population growth. (I bet you didn’t expect to see that on the opening slide)

Before we get to Europe specifically, let’s look at the historical population growth of the planet. Planet growth simulation

World Population Totals: *The NIR (Natural Increase Rate) of the world in the 21st century has been 1.2, meaning the overall population has been growing at 1.2% per year. That’s far lower than the all-time high of 2.2 in 1963. -About 80 million are added each year.

World population increased from 3 to 4 billion in 14 years, from 4 to 5 billion in 13 years, and from 5 to 6 billion in 12 years. How is that possible considering the rate of increase has been getting lower?

World population increased from 3 to 4 billion in 14 years, from 4 to 5 billion in 13 years, and from 5 to 6 billion in 12 years. How is that possible considering the rate of increase has been getting lower? Answer: Since the base population is so much bigger, even with less percentage of increase the overall numbers are bigger

4 Stages of Population Growth Use the copy of the AP textbook to get down notes on the four stages of population growth. The following terms will help make sense of the excerpt: CBR- Crude birth rate CDR- Crude death rate NIR- Natural increase rate Video simulation

Despite worldwide overpopulation growth, many European countries have declining population: List of countries with negative growth

Let’s take a break to look at some interesting population pyramids from around the U.S.

The big problems with the industrial world’s declining population: Not enough productive workers for good economic growth Not enough people paying taxes that support pension schemes (retirement plans, including social security) *Many European countries have taken on large numbers of immigrants to supplement their growth rates.
