Ch 5-6 Quiz What shape was the place Ralph stood for the assembly? What ocean is the island in? How did Piggy signal to the group that he only wished to listen, not speak at the assembly? What rule does Ralph make about fires? Who does Phil mistake for the beast?

Ch 5 Discussion Questions Half of the class will answer numbers 1-6, the other half will answer numbers 7-11. GROUP 1: What realization does Ralph have before the meeting in Chapter 5? What does Ralph remember that makes him flinch? Why does he react like that? Do you think talking about fear will help or make things worse? What does Piggy mean when he says, “There isn’t no fear … unless we get frightened of people” (32)? What do you think Simon is doing at night? What is Simon trying to say at the meeting? How do you conclude this? GROUP 2: Piggy asks if they’re humans or animals or savages. How do you think he would define the difference? What points does Jack make as he challenges Ralph’s authority? Which, in your opinion, are valid? Which are not? Explain. Do you think there is a beast? If so, what sort? Explain. What does Ralph’s reference to three blind mice suggest to you? Do you think Piggy’s insights into Jack’s character are valid? Explain.
