My Strengths & Leadership Practice Allison McClung

Strength 1: Developer I see the potential in others When I interact with others, my goal is to help them towards success; I look for ways to challenge others Signs of growth in others brings me strength and satisfaction People tend to seek me out for help and encouragement because they feel my helpfulness is genuine and fulfilling

Strength 2: Learner I love to learn I am energized by the journey from ignorance to competence The process of it is exciting for me: the thrill of the first facts, early efforts to recite and practice what I learned, and the growing confidence of skill mastered This enables me to thrive in dynamic work environments, however this does not mean that I seek to become an expert, the process of learning is more important than the outcome

Strength 3: Individualization I am intrigued by the unique qualities of each person, each person is special I observe each person’s style, motivation, how they think, and they build relationships I buy each of my friends the right birthday gift, and I tailor my teaching style to accommodate I can draw out the best in each person, because I am such a keen observer of other’s strengths This also helps me to build productive teams by dividing them by individual strengths so everyone can do a lot well.

Strength 4: Achiever I have a constant drive for achievement, and I must achieve something (big or small) everyday to feel good about myself I have an internal fire inside that pushes me to do more, it may not be logical or focused at times, but will always be there As an achiever I must learn to live with a feeling of discontent, but it does give me energy to work long hours and start new tasks It causes me to set the pace and define levels of productivity for my group

Strength 5: Relator The relator theme pulls me toward people I already know, and gives me pleasure and strength to be with close friends Once an initial connection has been made, I encourage a deepening of the relationship: I want to understand their feelings, goals, fears, dreams and I want them to understand mine I am willing to accept the risk of wanting closeness even though I might be taken advantage of A relationship only has value to me if it is genuine

How my strengths relate to my Leadership practice… As a developer I would have the goal to help those under my leadership towards success; I would look for ways to challenge others. I would enjoy seeing them grow, and I would be there for help and encouragement. As a learner I would be able to thrive in dynamic environments, and I would enjoy learning along the way and be able to learn new ways to lead and change the outcome. With individualization I would be able to observe each person’s style, motivation, how they think, and how they build relationships. I would tailor my teaching style to accommodate and draw out the best in each person; this also helps me to build productive teams. As an achiever it would give me energy to work and start new tasks, as well as set the pace and define levels of productivity for my group. As a relator once an initial connection has been made, I encourage a deepening of the relationship: I want to understand their feelings, goals, fears, dreams.
