Transition Year Information Evening

Transition Year Information Evening Patricia Roberts-Byrne- Introduction. Andrew Blanch- Transition Year Overview. Frances Ruane- Career Guidance. Brian Lambe- Gaisce Bronze Award. Louise Lohan- Hamper Fund. Kevin Huston- Technical Graphics and Design Appreciation and Awareness. Eric Miller- Sports Science. Stephen Tonge- Sport and the South African Exchange Program. Hugh Brett- Social Placements and School Trips.

Aims of Transition Year 1. Maturity: - Different experiences (Social Placements), opportunities (Ski Trip) and students are encouraged to take on roles of responsibility (Hamper Fund, School Bank). 2. Learning: - Learning styles on the programme include assigned exercises, group work, project work and research supported by access to a variety of resources e.g. Information Technology (E-Portfolio) Programme.

Aims of Transition Year 3. Communication: - Emphasis on group work places an onus on the student to co-operate, to discuss and to see other points of view e.g. Art, Drama, Mini-Company/Student Enterprise & Young Social Innovator. 4. Enterprise and Organizational Skills: - Introduces the student to a variety of skills such as accountability, record keeping, report writing, managerial skills and project development.

Aims of Transition Year 5. Experience to new subjects: - This allows students to experience new subjects (Biology, Economics, Classical Studies). - Students have a better idea what to select as their Leaving Certificate subjects before Fifth Year.

Structure of the Year Role of the Classhead Teacher: Monitor attendance, academic performances, behaviour and communicate information to students on a daily basis. TY team communicate on a daily basis and hold frequent meetings. Communication with parents (Email, phone, meetings). Student Participation: Expected to engage fully to the TY Programme. Students to complete a survey in early November.

Structure of the Year Three Modules in the academic year: - September to November, November to February, March to May. School based assessments in each module: Module One and Module Three: Written exams in the study hall, written class tests, group & individual projects , oral & aural exams and group & individual presentations. Module Two: Written class tests, group & individual projects , oral & aural exams and group & individual presentations.

Structure of the Year Emphasis on the Core Subjects: - English, Irish and Maths. - Build on Junior Cycle/Certificate skills in preparation for the Leaving Certificate. Sciences: - Each student has the option of studying a module of Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Languages: - Spanish, German, French and Chinese.

Structure of the Year Other optional subjects include: - History, Geography, Classical Studies, Sports Science, Environmental Studies, Technical Graphics, Design Appreciation & Awareness, Introduction to Web Programming, Human Rights, Videography, Music Production, Debating, Drama, Art, Martial Arts, Meditation, Yoga, European Studies, Music, Applied Maths, Accounting, Economics, Business, Mini-Company/Student Enterprise, Religion.

Structure of the Year Information Technology Programme (E-Portfolio): - Students complete this programme for the full year. - Certified by the school. Career and College Preparation Programme: - Runs for the full year.

Structure of the Year Gaisce Bronze Award: Runs for the full year. Co-ordinated by Mr. Lambe. CUS School Bank: Students apply and interview before the end of Third Year. Interviews conducted by Bank of Ireland employees. Training begins in September. Bank opens every Tuesday lunchtime from September to Late February. Co-ordinated by Ms. Scally.

Structure of the Year Career Guidance in 4th Year: - Career Guidance provided by Ms. Ruane. - DATS test to take place before the Parent Teacher Meeting. Workshops/Field Trips during the Year: Trinity and St. James’ Hospital Medicine Week. Science Trip to Belfast. R.C.S.I Medicine Week. Forensic Science Workshop. DCU TY Computer Course. Business Field Trips e.g. Bank of Ireland Global Markets. Aviation Trip to Baldonnel. Iveagh Scholars Programme. Bar of Ireland TY Programme. TYPE TCD Physics and Nanoscience Programme.

Structure of the Year Social Placements, Hamper Fund and Vincent De Paul. Guest Speakers: AWARE, ACCORD, ALONE, CAREER TALKS. Courses with outside Certification: Red Cross First Aid Course, Gaisce Bronze Award, Barista Course. TY School Trips: History Trip, Ski Trip, South African Exchange Program, Foreign Exchange Trips and CUS Philippines Project.

Structure of the Year Work Experience: Two official weeks sanctioned by the school. First week 19th November – 23rd November 2018 (Provisional date). Second week 25th February – 1st March 2019. Third week may be organised by sending an application into the school on email. The third week should be viewed as good opportunity for the student to attain experience in a career they are considering pursuing.

Transition Year 2018/2019 TY Presentations will be organised for third year students in the study hall in mid April. Preference form to be sent home to 3rd year parents after these presentations and returned in early May.
