Statement of Objectives So far in this unit, we have been discussing relationships. Today we are going to discuss qualities of healthy dating relationships. By the end of the lesson, you will be able to describe a healthy relationship and recognize behaviors that may be considered unhealthy. Also, you will understand the definition of dating violence

Focus: Fish Bowl Activity Split into two groups- boys and girls. Girls will go first and answer open ended questions, while the boys listen by being active listeners After, boys and girls will switch roles

Focus (Alternate): Letter Listen to the following story from an anonymous female Can abusive relationships happen in teen relationships? What was unhealthy about this relationship? Why did the author stay in the relationship?

Draw Activity You will create a pro and cons chart of being a male and also being a female. Brainstorm your thoughts for a few minutes on your own paper- then you will draw it using nearpod. This activity will open up different views and perspectives from both males and females.

Principles of healthy dating 1. Must accept and feel good about ourselves. A healthy relationship should result in a heightened sense of self-worth for both partners. You should not feel less due to being in a relationship

2. Communication Must be able to communicate needs and wants clearly Need to share and listen both ways Need to handle issues with proper communication- NOT with physical violence, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, control, criticism Listen, negotiate, compromise

3. Honesty and Openness Be yourself from the start of the relationship Person you are dating should allow you to be YOU Have similar beliefs, interests, lifestyles Self disclosure and openness deepens healthy relationship

4. Respect Work together to solve differences without demeaning or insulting each other Respect each other’s individuality Follow honesty is the best policy Listen and value each other Genuine care

What are some healthy dating qualities?

Healthy Dating Qualities Companionship Spend time together/similar interests Trust Loyalty Share joys and struggles together Show care Concern for each other’s well being Realistic expectations Concern for feelings, not competitive No jealousy issues

Unhealthy Relationships Dating Violence: A threat or act of violence against one member of a dating relationship by the other member This includes acts of sexual violence, physical abuse and verbal or emotional abuse

Dating violence can happen to teens and it can happen to teens of both genders Effects of a violent relationship: -May suffer from low self-esteem -May become involved with alcohol and drugs -May engage in risky sexual behaviors

What are some unhealthy dating qualities?

Unhealthy Dating Qualities Poor or inappropriate communication Lack of respect Makes on feel less and lowers self-esteem Possessiveness Violence or seeking control Fear Shallow, lacks openness Opposite lifestyles Lacks commitment, care, trust, interests

Why might someone who is in an unhealthy dating relationship stay in that relationship?

Grab Bag Activity Healthy and unhealthy characteristics are in a bag. Students will grab one out of the bag at a time and class will discuss if it is a healthy or unhealthy quality

Independent Practice Make it Or Break it AD You are going to create a ad/poster describing the kind of person you want in a relationship. You can include qualities you desire and qualities that you don’t desire. Include hobbies, interests and interests that may “break it”
