COVER WORK: 1. YOU NEED TO COMPLETE YOUR LYMPSTONE AND TOXTETH CASE STUDY. 2. IF YOU FINISH THIS DURING TODAY’S LESSON (SOME OF YOU MAY) YOU NEED TO LOOK THROUGH THIS POWERPOINT AND COMPLETE THE QUESTIONS ON THE SLIDES BASED ON THE CASE STUDY. THIS IS DESIGNED TO TEST HOW MUCH YOU HAVE TAKEN IN ABOUT YOUR CASE STUDY RATHER THAN YOU JUST MEMORISING IT. 3. IF YOU FINISH ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS, THEN AT THE END OF THE POWERPOINT THERE ARE 5 PRACTISE EXAM STYLE QUESTONS, SOME ARE BASED ON THE CASE STUDY AND OTHERS ON THE THINGS WE HAVE LOOKED AT SO FAR. HAVE GO AT COMPLETING THESE. HOMEWORK: THIS WEEK IS TO COMPLETE THE CASE STUDY AND THE QUESTIONS ON THE SLIDES. IF YOU COMPLETED THIS IN CLASS THEN YOUR HOMEWORK IS TO COMPLETE THE EXAM QUESTIONS AT THE END OF THE POWERPOINT. IF YOU HAVE SOME HOW DONE ALL OF THIS, THEN GO TO PAGE 147 AND COMPLETE THE REMAINING 5 QUESTIONS FROM THE REVIEW QUESTIONS THAT YOU DID NOT CHOOSE LAST TIME.

Case Study: Toxteth, Liverpool and Lympstone, East Devon Present Day Characteristics: Demographics QUESTIONS: How does the age structure compare in Lympstone and Toxteth? Why do you think this is?

Case Study: Toxteth, Liverpool and Lympstone, East Devon Present Day Characteristics: Ethnic and Cultural Profile QUESTIONS: Use p143-144 to: Explain why the ethnic profiles are different in Toxteth and Lympstone. How have these profiles lead to different cultural aspects to the two regions?

Case Study: Toxteth, Liverpool and Lympstone, East Devon Present Day Characteristics: Socio-Economic Profile QUESTIONS: Compare the socio-economic profiles for Toxteth and Lympstone. How do they compare with the England average? Why do you think this may be?

Finally, use p146 to answer the following QUESTION: Case Study: Toxteth, Liverpool and Lympstone, East Devon Present Day Characteristics: Political and Built Environment Use p145 to summarise the key aspects of the political and built environment in Toxteth and Lympstone. Finally, use p146 to answer the following QUESTION: Explain how the movement of resources and people in each location has influenced changes in the identity of the places.

What is the name of the website you need to use to find the data? Much of this data is obtained from a survey taken in most ACs, called a CENSUS In the UK it is undertaken every 10 years- in year ending 1, so 2011 was the last one and 2021 will be next. A day is chosen when all UK residents must complete a form about their households, children, job etc at THAT GIVEN POINT IN TIME. http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk Above is the website that has the census data on it. If looking at small/ local areas you should search LSOAs (Lower level super output areas) in rural areas and Ward data in urban areas (like where we live). However you must be aware that the data has limitations Questions to answer- What is a census? What is the name of the website you need to use to find the data? What type of area should you view to find rural area data? What type of area should you view to find urban area data ?

Limitations of Census data Can you think of any issues with census data? Its just a snapshot of that particular time/ day etc - the person may have a child or move very soon afterwards. As years pass the data becomes more and more out of date The boundaries used can change so it becomes more difficult to directly compare areas.

If you have completed your case study and you have answered the questions on this powerpoint for each section. See if you can complete the following exam questions: What are the differences between demographic and socio-economic characteristics? [2] What is meant by the term knowledge economy? [2] Describe and explain some of the differences between the place profiles of Lympstone and Toxteth. [6] How has the shifting flow of resources and ideas changed Lympstone as a place? [3] Using examples, distinguish between place and space. [4]
