Symbolism in RE Why are symbols important? How do they help us? Why do you think Religions have symbols?

Religious Symbols

Christianity What do you think the cross represents? WHY?

Christianity The Crucifix The Christian symbol is a cross, it represents the Christian Religion because it represents when Jesus was resurrected after he had died to take the sins from the world. Christians believe in one God. He is all powerful, all knowing and loving. The Cross The crucifix is also a common Christian symbol and is used to represent Jesus’ suffering when he died to save his people from sin.

Hinduism The Hindu symbol is called the ‘Aum’. ‘Aum’ is the noise used during meditation but is also considered sacred because at the beginning of the world it was the noise that Brahman used to create the universe. AUM Brahman is the supreme God in Hinduism, but there are also many other gods that Hindu's worship such as Ganesh and Shiva.

Islam The star and crescent is the best-known symbol used to represent Islam. Muslims use the crescent moon and the star because it was used to help guide travellers through the dark- like their religion does. Star and Crescent The moon is important to Muslims because as the first sighting of the new moon marks the beginning of each new month. The new moon also marks the beginning and ending of Ramadan, the period of fasting. Muslims believe in one supreme god called Allah. In the Islamic religion Allah has over 99 names!! "Allah" in Arabic
