Looking at Frankenstein through critical lenses Psychoanalytic Reader-Response Formalism

Formalism (pg. 117) Treats each work as its own distinct piece, free from its environment, era and even author Questions How does the work use imagery to develop its own symbols? How are the various parts of the work interconnected? How do paradox, irony, ambiguity, and tension work in the text?

Psychoanalytic (pg. 118) Freud Jung Id Ego SuperEgo Oedipus/Electra Complex Jung Shadow Anima Animus

Reader-Response (pg. 122) Role of the reader cannot be omitted from our understanding of the literature Readers do not passively consume the meaning presented to them by an objective literary text “…what a text is cannot be separated from what it does” (Tyson).

Choose a number 1’s – prepare for a discussion relating Formalism to Frankenstein 2’s – prepare for a discussion relating Psychoanalysis to Frankenstein 3’s – prepare for a discussion relating Reader-Response to Frankenstein

Tomorrow After the vocab quiz, you will be participating in a fishbowl discussion similar to the discussions we had regarding lenses and Their Eyes Were Watching God How to be prepared: Apply your assigned lens to Frankenstein Have TEXT SUPPORT from the novel to back up your points

Fishbowl Discussions Each group will have 8-10 minutes, depending on the time available after the vocab quiz. When a member of the inner circle — participate! When a member of the outer circle — take notes, use the empty chair, and absorb the brilliance of your classmates.
