Angel Mounds

Let’s look at the mounds! http://www.angelmounds.org/about-us-2/angel-mounds/

What do you think these are?

The mounds are a part of a prehistoric Native American culture

Angel Mounds Location Present-day Evansville

The city was part of the Mississippian Culture The people who built the mounds inhabited the area from 1100-1450. They used the Ohio River to support their crops. It is estimated that nearly 1,000 Native Americans lived in the city.

Why mounds? The people built eleven mounds by carrying basketfuls of dirt from the Ohio River. The mounds were built so that the people could live closer to their gods. The mounds also protected homes when the Ohio River flooded.

How do we know about this culture? The Mississippian culture was before written history. Therefore, we must depend on archeologists in order to understand this interesting culture. Archeologists are people who study long ago cultures by making inferences based on artifacts.
