The Fur Trade Social Studies 7 Pages 110-114

The Fur Trade Phase 2: Expansion Inland 1603-1670 France dominated the Fur Trade during this phase New France became a permanent settlement. Quebec and Montreal became shipping centres Trade routes followed the St. Lawrence River and its tributaries

Phase 2 Continued The French, Ouendat, Mi’kmaq Innu and Kichesiprini became partners in the fur trade The French-Haudenosaunee war began Catholic Missionaries established missions among the Mi’kmaq, Ouendat, Innu, Kichesiprini and Anishinabe Coureurs De Bois emerged Intense trapping and hunting began to reduce the population of beaver and game animal.

French-Haudenosaunee War War started either because France and fur trade, or from France being involved with allies who were in conflict with the Haudenosaunee. Haudenosaunee gained support from Dutch and British (way to overthrow France) Haudenosaunee defeated Ouendat, a French ally French took military action which forced the Haudenosaunee into a truce in 1701

Catholic Missions Jesuit missionaries wanted to convert First Nations to Christianity First Nations people took different approaches to conversion: No interest at all Converted to solidify alliance with French Followed a blend of tradition and Christianity Followed traditional practices only with own people

Coureur De Bois Emerged The loss of the Ouendat as a middleman disrupted trade in New France Independent traders began trading with First Nations Was originally allowed by New France, but soon was made illegal

Intense Trapping and Hunting As furs and food became scarce, traders and middlemen moved west into new regions.

Middleman??? A person or company that works between you an the producer. For example: Buying Pepsi from Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has to buy Pepsi from The Pepsi-Cola Company. Wal-Mart places the item on the shelf for you to purchase. Wal-Mart is the middleman.

Needs Vs Wants What is the difference between a need and a want? Use examples from your own life to clarify the difference. How might needs and wants affect trading relationships? For example: Both want something the other has Both need something the other has One needs something, and wants something the other has List some examples of needs and wants in the trading relationship between French and First Nations peoples during this phase of the fur trade. How would you say these needs and wants affected their relationship? Hand out questions for students to respond to.
