WWI Europe 1914

Causes of WWI in Europe. Nationalism. Militarism. Alliances Causes of WWI in Europe * Nationalism * Militarism * Alliances * Competition over Power and Land World War I – The Great War, The War to End all Wars 1914-1918

Nationalism Think Soccer Nationalism Think Soccer! The way soccer fans feel about their favorite teams was similar to the way citizens of the countries of Europe felt about where they were from. Their country was the strongest, most powerful, most advanced, etc…

This leads to the series of events that begins World War I 1 This leads to the series of events that begins World War I 1. Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary is assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist. 2. Austria – Hungary is an ally of Germany and they declare war on Serbia. 3. ? 4. ? Complete a timeline of the start of WWI in Europe. Give dates and specifics.

Militarism The countries of Europe (especially Germany) either wanted to be in an alliance with Great Britain, or be stronger than them. It was a race to have a military as strong as G.B.’s Navy.

Alliances Countries were beginning to pair off and form clicks much like you people on the playground at recess. : -) Countries who were left out felt angry, leading to formations of alliances of their own. Just in case things were about to “go down.”

Competition Over Power and Land Who was the military power of Europe? Who controlled the most land around the world? Who had the biggest problem with this?

British Empire in 1900
