Making our sentences more specific ....... Going Green

Which sentence gives more details to the reader? A) There are a lot of fun games to play. OR B) One fun game you can play is the bean bag toss.

Sentence B gives more details by including an example! Sentence A just tells the reader that there are fun games. Sentence B names a game that can be played. Good writers include specific examples in their writing. We call this going green.

B) My brother laughed so hard that his stomach hurt. Read both sentences and decide which gives more details and should be highlighted ”green”. A) My brother laughed so hard that his stomach hurt for the rest of the day. B) My brother laughed so hard that his stomach hurt.

Sentence A is green. A) My brother laughed so hard that his stomach hurt for the rest of the day. B) My brother laughed so hard that his stomach hurt. Good writers give more details their sentences that create a picture in the readers mind.

Which sentence should be highlighted green because it is more specific? A) We went to see my grandma. B) We drove all the way to Alabama to visit my grandma.

Sentence B is highlighted green because it is more specific. A) We went to go see my grandma. B) We drove all the way to Alabama to visit my grandma.

Read the sentence. What can you change or add to make it more specific? The ride was fun. ( As the reader you might ask this questions: What was the name of the ride? Why was it fun? ) Rewrite the sentence to make it a GREEN sentence.
