Inspirational Quote: Glue in Notebook Session 2: What are three parts of an engaging story? Inspirational Quote: Glue in Notebook “We love to expect, and when expectation is either disappointed or gratified, we want to be again expecting.” –Samuel Johnson

Teaching point Readers know how stories are structured and they use this knowledge to predict and summarize before, during, and after reading.

Teacher Model& Think Aloud: Listen as I read the following “stories”. Pause & think about what is being included. Lost, then found. Too bad. – Graeme Gibson Failed SAT. Lost scholarship. Invented rocket. – William Shatner What three components of a story are present?

…more short story example Longed for him. Got him. [Shoot.]- Margaret Atwood Wasted day. Wasted life. Dessert, please. –Steven Meretzky

What do all four of these example have in common? These are really plot summaries of a whole story in just a few words, and these examples have, as all stories do, Three relatively predictable parts of a story: a problem or desire, a character’s attempt to deal with the problem or desire, and a resolution to the problem.

Active Engagement: Turn and Talk In just a few words, summarize a story you’ve read or a movie or TV show they’ve seen lately, like the previous sample. Remember to illustrate the problem, the character’s attempt to deal with the problem or desire, and the resolution.

Create your own: Write your own three sentence summary of a story (you’re the author). Draw pictures that represent all three elements of your story on construction paper. Report Out, share

Session 2 Continued: Modeling Let’s read “Th“Flu” together. Bracket the three parts of “Flu” as we discuss. Let’s come up with a brief summary of each part. Problem or desire: Character’s attempt to deal with the problem or desire: Resolution to the problem: 2. 3.

Independent Practice: Read and annotate “The Wallet” Work in pairs to bracket and label the three parts of the story. Write a brief three sentence summary (including the three main parts)of “The Wallet” Share/Report Out
