Summer 2008 Pen-based computing A potential revolution in the making

Goals and objectives GOALS: Becoming familiar with the general context of pen-based computing Becoming familiar with the tablet features OBJECTIVES: At the end of this session you will be able to: Use the pen as an alternative to the mouse to perform basic tasks (e.g. open, close, and save files) Write, save, edit files in Windows Journal Use the pen to ink files produced in Word PowerPoint

Exercises At different times you will see slides entitled EXERCISE These slides consist of detailed steps you are supposed to perform on your own Call on any of us if you need help When all have completed the exercise, well move on Talking to your neighbors during exercises is highly encouraged

Plan of our work Why pen based computing for you? Meet your tablet-PC The machine The screen The pen Experience the freedom MS Journal Inking other familiar applications MS Word MS PowerPoint MS Excel

Why Pen-Based computing? You and the machine Who serves whom? Who adapts to whose work-flow? Keyboard and mouse Familiar but unnatural interface

A growing movement WIPTE HP grants Books Microsoft Education Package: Microsoft Education Package GoBinder Equation Writer Flash Cards Send to One Note

EXERCISE: Getting started Turn it on (slide button on left front of the base) After you have logged-on once while cabled, you can log-on with your usual Campus Connect ID and pwd

A different kind of screen The screen of your new machine pivots 180degrees (in one direction only, clockwise) and folds Once fully folded you will have to release the latch in front to raise the screen again The screen is designed to be touched, do not be afraid of resting your hand on it when folded Yes, it will get dirty, much dirtier than your other computers…

EXERCISE Pivot your screen Fold it On the right hand side of the machine body, close to the screen, find the spot where a tether is hooked. Press inward and release: grab your new friend, the PEN

The Pen The pen can perform all functions that you are used to perform with a mouse Click, right click, double click, select, drag… The pen can perform all the functions that you are used to perform with a keyboard type The pen functions as a pen, eraser and highlighter !

Golden rule for the pen While using the pen, do not focus on the tip of the pen itself, but on the shadow of the pen on the screen

EXERCISE Using the pen, tap on START All Programs Get going with Tablet PC Follow along the brief introduction to using the pen When you get to slide number 17, select Exit and tap on Finish (you can come back on your own for the extended tour)

The Pen alternative features Your pen offers alternative ways to perform two operations: Access the ERASER Press the small round button on the pen body Perform a right-click Press the button on the pen body and tap the screen once

Experiencing the freedom Windows Journal ssel_03january20.mspx ssel_03january20.mspx A notebook in the true sense of the word Combines the freedom of freehand writing the ability to move parts of your writing around the possibility of adding-removing space The possibility of post-processing your writing (change color, boldify…) Stay with me for two minutes and then you will have the opportunity to play on your own

EXERCISE Tap on Start All Programs TabletPC Windows Journal Write two paragraphs describing your first reactions to this new way of interacting with the screen Save your file on the Desktop as YourFirstName_journal1 Quit Windows Journal by tapping the X at the upper right corner Find your journal1 file on the desktop and open it by double tapping on it Edit your writing by using at least once each one the following tools: Pen with various thicknesses Highlighter Eraser Space maker-reducer Lasso Flag Bold/Italic

Inking with Word The tablet gives you the possibility of making ink annotations on any Word file This is very useful for online assignments Instructor assigns a paper Students submit online You give hand-written feedback and return the assignment online Students open the file with their usual Word, without the need of having a tablet, and see your feedback

EXERCISE Log into the DOTS Spring 09 site on Blackboard On the left side menu, click on Materials Look for Materials for Intro to Tablets Right click on Assignment_To_Ink Save it on your desktop Open the file in word Assume this was an excerpt of a paper submitted by a student of yours for an assignment requiring her to reflect on the strategic role of online learning at DePaul

EXERCISE Under the Review menu select Start Inking A new menu palette will appear on top of the page. The palette is very similar to the one you saw in Journal Use it to make a few annotations on the paper, as you would if you were giving feedback on a physical paper. Save and close the file Reopen the file to see your inking Edit your inking (change position, color, thickness…)

Inking PowerPoint slides You can ink slides in both editing and slide-show mode The inking in edit mode works exactly as the inking in WORD Inkings are treated as any other graphic objects you insert on a slide

EXERCISE Log into the DOTS Spring 09 site on Blackboard On the left side menu, click on Materials Look for Materials for Intro to Tablets Right click on PPT_Assignment_To_Ink Save it on your desktop Open the file in PowerPoint If you do not see the inking tool palette already, go to Review Start Inking

EXERCISE Ink a title on the title slide Add an ink annotation to the second slide Save the file Go to SlideShow View Show At the bottom left corner of each slide now you see the familiar arrows to advance slides and a new PEN icon Tap on the pen icon Select the thickness and color you like Experiment inking the slides Highlight something on the third slide What happens when you quit the slide show? Experiment with the options offered by the program

Goals and objectives GOALS: Becoming familiar with the tablet features Becoming familiar with the general context of pen-based computing OBJECTIVES: At the end of this session you will be able to: Use the pen as an alternative to the mouse to perform basic tasks (e.g. open, close, and save files) Write, save, edit files in Windows Journal Use the pen to ink files produced in Word PowerPoint
