Setting

The setting is when and where the story takes place. What is Setting? The setting is when and where the story takes place.

Three Elements of Setting Development Place- Where does the story take place? Time- When does the story take place? Environment- How would you describe the place? What is the habitat and weather like? What plants, animals, and other objects are in the place?

The geographical location of your story. Place The geographical location of your story. The place might include such things as a city, state, country, castle, cottage, playground, ship, mountain, or stadium. For example: Cairo, London, Morehead City, USS North Carolina, the Smokey Mountains

Time The time period of your story. The time might include clues that let us know it is the afternoon, evening, the future, colonial times, or clock time. For example: 1865, during WWII, three o’clock, 2019

The characteristics of the location. Environment The characteristics of the location. The environment might include details that describe the weather, the noise level, or darkness. For example: wealthy suburbs, sunny, depression dustbowl, quiet mountains

The setting can be used to set the atmosphere for the story: “During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country.” “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe

Is the Setting Important? Twilight is set in Forks, Washington, one of the rainiest and cloudiest places in the United States. This is what I am Why is the setting in Twilight important?

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is the story of a secret friendship between the young son of a Nazi officer and a young Jewish boy, who is imprisoned at Auschwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust.
